We all know how much of a nightmare finding the right wedding dress can be; after all it’s only the biggest day of your life, so it has to be perfect. It’s not just the dress either, jewellery, hair styles, handbags and emergency makeup pouches are all essential items to be considered when deciding on your wedding dress. But before you tackle all of those you will first need to consider which wedding shoes will fit the bill?
Getting the right shoes sorted first could make or break your perfect dress and trust me, it’s a lot easier to try on lots of different shoes than dresses. Remember, your wedding shoes should reflect your personality; whether its tall and sparkly shoes for the elegant, ‘bling’, look or the comfy and practical flip flops that really make your day unique. Either way, you want something that is going to reflect your personality fully and keep you going until the very last dance!
It might take a while before you find the perfect pair but patience is a virtue and you will find them at the right price. If you know your size you can easily find online retailers where you browse and see a range of different wedding shoe styles. It is important to do this earlier rather than later and remember you can get some pretty good deals when buying last year’s styles.
Once you have found your perfect pair you should bring them to your dress fittings as ultimately they could determine your dress style. The height, posture, lines and details can all affect the ‘overall look’ and as it only happens once, it’s important to get it right.
Sounds like a mission right? We’re not going to deny it, finding the right wedding shoe is no easy feat, which is why we have created a few simple guidelines to help you find the best pair of shoes easily and simply.
Considerations for selecting the right shoes.
Shoe Size:
As mentioned above, wedding shoes are normally similar sizes to day to day shoes which means you should already know your size. Why not go online and buy a few pairs?! If you are unsure about your size you can use our online wedding shoe size chart.
Shoe Height:
It’s probably best to not suddenly change your height style. Now is NOT the time to start wearing stilettos, certainly if you normally wear flat sole shoes. That’s not to say you shouldn’t have a bit of heel
Think about the terrain of your venue, if your reception is on grass with a marquee, again stilettos aren’t advisable, the same with cobbles or slabs. There is nothing worse than toppling over whilst walking down the aisle.
If you have already bought your wedding dress, how long is it? If you have a long train behind you may want to consider a big of height so it doesn’t catch you up. For shorter dresses you will also want to consider taller heels to lengthen your legs, but short heels or even flip flops can also be quite classy!
Don’t be afraid to break the rules if that’s your style! The most important consideration is comfort, if you can’t walk properly or your feet ache after 30minutes, don’t buy them.
You may also want to consider your natural height in comparison to your husband-to-be/partner. Ideally you want your photos to be on the same or proportionate level so it might not be ideal to wear stilts if you are already tall compared.
Shoe Style:
This is the big one, there are so many styles out there and how that style reflects you and your dress says a lot. If you have a long wedding dress, chances are your feet will unlikely be seen and therefore a simpler design will suit. But with shorter dresses becoming more popular, your feet will become a highlight of your ‘look’ and you want them to be as glamorous and fitting as possible.
Traditionally the shoes should match similar colour and fabric as your dress. However if you fancy being a bit fun and creative, you can always experiment around a bit. Choosing colours that contrast, yet compliment can really emphasis your personality.
Finally what sort of attire do you expect your guests to wear? If you want them looking pin sharp in black tie then perhaps flip flops or trainers aren’t the best idea! Vice versus if your wedding is a bit more laid back and casual maybe a sparkly whopper of a wedge with straps running up and down isn’t quite appropriate, although they will certainly grab attention!
Shoe Cost:
Finally the biggest consideration is cost, be realistic about what your wedding budget can afford. You can’t go hiking up the aisle in the wrong boots and it’s not necessary to spend £500 on a pair of high end shoes. You need to pick what fits your budget, your style and most of all is comfortable. If you are on a budget there are lots of options still available, have a browse online, see what you like and try them out…you’ll know when you find the perfect pair.
